Dirty Bird Confidence Series

Mark your calendars. July 7th we will hold our annual Dirty Bird event. We will meet at the NOC outpost (on the pigeon river @ 11), gather, do our safety talk, break up into groups and get on the river. We will divide slicey boats and little playboats. Along the way the trip leaders will give tips regarding getting vertical, rock spins, splats, surfing, etc. Just ask.

For complete event details, be sure to check out our facebook event page.

The history of the event: Paddle in Pink was created in memory of Jennifer Watson who lost her life on the Little White 6 years ago. This event was created in her memory and as money was raised, it was donated to an animal shelter because Jen loved animals. This year, all proceeds will go to the Live Like Maria Foundation as I fully believe Jen would much rather the money go toward such a great foundation. Maria Noakes had a passion for playboating, inspiring women and kids and I could not think of a better way to celebrate these two incredible women.

SweetWater Brewing Company is again sponsoring the event. In order to enjoy their delicious beer, there will be a Live Like Maria pint glass for sale ($10). We will also conclude the event with a raffle. $5 for 1 ticket or $10 will get you 3 raffle tickets. Jackson Kayak is our main sponsor and the grand prize this year will be a Jackson Kayak Karma (small). There will be a number of other prizes and sponsors are being added daily. To date, the list includes: Jackson Kayak, SweetWater Brewing Company, World Kayak, and Pyranha.

As with most group paddles, the day can get long. Please have food and water on hand. And please, drink responsibly!

I started kayaking in Wisconsin of all places, because this is where I am from. I then moved to San Diego and took on kayak surfing along with heading to the Kern River when water was available. I then made the move to Asheville, NC and have been hooked on this sport since my Wisconsin days. With whatever it is that you do, do it because you love it, not because society tells you should or for other outside factors. Don't simply exist, live!
